Is the Unemployment Rate a Leading Indicator?

The employment picture is still pretty bright in fact I think unemployment is historically low. One way a company starts to cut back on its labor costs without firing or laying off people is by cutting back on the hours worked. And when you start to see hours worked tail off that's usually a leading indicator that things are not that consumption demand is starting to slow down in the economy. The residential housing market has been under pressure and as those prices come down activity slows down.
