If there were population expansions, contractions and replacements in the americas, that would be very much of a piece with what we're learning about the population history of human groups globally at that point in time. In climatically difficult periods, which is what we're talking about here, it's not hard to see how you can have earlier people there who don't leave a genetic contribution. There's like upper paleolithic europeans. There's tons of different kind of strains of evidence that lead us to think that those groups may not have had contact and may not have overlapped with each other. So if you go back far enough, they're going to be so sticky.
