Heat Stress Promotes Longevity
Short-term stress can result in a reduction in long-term chronic stress. This is called Hormetic Stress. Exposing the body to heat through exercise, from the sauna, cold stress, and fasting are examples of this type of stress. Using the sauna two to three times per week was associated with a 24% lower all-cause mortality compared to men that only used the sauna one time a week. Just one exposure to heat stress in flies and worms has been shown to increase their lifespan by 15%.
