Amazon was the first company to build a service oriented architecture. Instead of a monolithic code base software architecture, every individual feature is its own architecture completely separate from everything else. It's worth teasing out one is a sort of human cultural thing, which is trying to reduce Metcalf's law.
So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
