Kuiper and Bovink on Common Grace

I would be weary of reading the doctrine too much through the lens of the historical context. Kuiper's doing when he starts to write, he wrote six years on common grace and newspaper articles. The two major things that were driving them are one to develop Calvin in a way they thought had been under had never been developed by the Reformed Orthodox. And secondly, the universality or just how fundamental graces in their concept after the fall would would generalize context if you will.
