A School for Recent Immigrants in Houston, Texas

The Las America program is a school for recent arrivals in Houston, Texas. Students are caring much more than their book bags to school and many of our students are still wounds from migration or family reunification. One of the things they do is create a sensory garden outside that had plants, sensory plants, lots of herbs from all over the world. And it became a place where if a student is feeling upset or lonely or sad or maybe they can't yet express what emotions they're feeling, they can come out into the space. It leads to conversations around migration and how hard it is to be uprooted and to build somewhere else.
