The Human Desire to Have Heroes
I think there is this very human but fallen desire to have heroes that we can say, well, you know, I struggle and I'm, and I'm nobody. The Bible as world literature is absolutely unique in the way that it constantly highlights the flaws of all its serious heroes. Almost every single one, apart from Jesus, the narrative takes great delight in pointing out their flaws. That's the contrast, isn't it, between the kind of hagiography that we get today? You know, I've often thought it was absolutely remarkable that the writers of the scriptures were writing authoritative apostolic accounts.
