What Is the History of Oblation?

At some point the cathedral education of these singers kind of overtook the monastic practice. Oblation reached its peak in the 12th century and then canon law begins to dictate that there shouldn't be boys younger than 14. So you have fewer and fewer child oblates in general and also a lot more adult novices coming into the monastic life. Some of them became the antecedents of really the singing schools of the later much later middle ages and early modern period.
