Is It Safer to Mechanically Ventilate Patients With Long Time Constants?
Patients with severe obstructive disease and long time constants self-regulate their IDEA ratios when they are breathing on their own. When you take away that self-regulation by sedating and mechanically ventilating the patient, you control the IDEA ratio. So given all the potential complications with mechanical ventilation, is it safer to just let the patient in the scenario to continue to spontaneously breathe? Sometimes yes.
