The Federal Reserve went from a zero interest rate environment to 4.5% in a little over one year. The problem is that even though the Fed jacked up interest rates, they were never able to get inflation lower than 6%. Banks tried not to buy assets that have a risk profile that would increase the odds of them losing depositors' money.
