If you're doing English for academic purposes, maybe reading will have a bigger important. But then again, listening and speaking are also hugely significant. Listening is really important because how can you expect to be able to speak a language without knowing really what it sounds like? Of course. So I think for me, it's sort of a balance that you should definitely focus on language as a communication system.
