CHAPTER

The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe

The book first came out in 1719. There was something of a fashion for voyage adventure stories at that time, wasn't there? And Defor buys into that. We're looking at a fictional narrative that builds on the travel narratives that have already been published. A lot of those travel narratives actually come from actual sailors who have really undertaken these journeys. Now, Defor himself didn't do that, of course. He's borrowing from those, but he adds things to it in terms of the kind of psychological experience of travelling around the world.
