The skin takes shape so early in the development of the fetus. In weeks five through eight, the skin gives the fetus access to sensory experience that precedes even the formation of the eyes, the ears, the tongue. Skin sensations are the first sensory representations that are imprinted on the human psyche before the fetus can even hear the voice of the mother. So we hypothesize that things happen already in the womb.
