Exploration of the Second Cataract in Nubia

The quest for gold is commonly held as one of the primary reasons for the egyptians to establish a permanent presence in lower nubia. The entire region between elephantine and the second cataract was loaded with valuable mineral resources. All of that gold, alabaster granite and construction stone was shipped down river to thebes, abidos, copdos, ichtae, heliopolis and memphis. At the moment, no such project is under way. So any more information about the region and its history in this period can only be achieved by underwater archaeology.
