The Classical Period of the Scottish Enlightenment
The ideas of locke and of newton were crucial. Of course, so were the ideas of other peoples. But this was wer talking as regards the eighteenth century when almost everybody thought of himself or herself as a newtonian. The classic period of the scottish enlightenment has usually taken as from s the yearly 17 fortieste 17 thirties to about the early 17 nineties. When did they realize something was going on? I think one of the best indicators of this is the external response. It still seems to me to be quite extraordinary.
