The History of the Bed Bug
In ancient Greece, the word they used was chorus, C-O-R-I-S, which means to bite. And allegedly gave rise to the name for coriander because when you crush the fresh leaves and seeds, it's supposed to give off a smell like that of crushed bed bugs. In Germany, newly arrived bed bugs as of the 11th century would be called various names including Nightcrawler, paper flounder, and little venereal. But the English word was short and sweet, and so perfect that it literally has stood more than the test of time. Not bed bug, just bug. Just bug. That's what it was referring to.
