Phyllis Wheatley was the first African American author to publish a book of poetry. Her poem Slaved Woman is anthologized as her suggesting that it was just wonderful that she was kidnapped and brought from Africa to America. That's not at all what she's saying, says historian Henry Lewis Gates. "I don't think I can think of any other black intellectual earlier who's had that kind of lasting impact"
