Dolby's early history is really the life story of his eponymous founder, Ray Dolby. The legend goes that after completing his PhD, Ray was working in India with United Nations. And while he was going on his travels around there, he got frustrated with the very audible tape hiss. This early technology became known as Dolby Noise Reduction and it quickly became a de facto standard for audio cassettes.
