The Christmas riots of 1647 turned out to be the most vocal and violent pushback. In London, the Lord Mayor and his deputies were met by an angry mob. The biggest uprising was down in Canterbury, ancient home of England's senior archbishop. Puritans on the County Council outlawed any celebration of 'ridiculous behaviour'
