They're forming effectively a multicellular organism is a colony rather than strictly multicellular,. But the conditions that they're subject to depends on where you are in the colony - whether it's oxygen deprived or not. So just the structure of a blob immediately gives you a difference between the outside and the inside and the likelihood of cells. You need to have a better system of organizing it if you wish to become any more complicated than a blob.
