Democritus Is the Philosopher Who Laughs

Democritus is known as the laughing philosopher. He's often contrasted with Heraclitus, the philosopher who was associated with sadness and melancholy. And so we cannot help but see something resembling a joyous science within the figure of Democritus. Nietzsche probably got that coinage, the phrase gay science or joyous science from Emerson.
