All Words Are Made Up, Right?

All words are made up. That's one of the first things my son learned and throws back at me. Sometimes it catches on so much that within a generation, it becomes totally standard. And sometimes it gets completely forgotten. What do you think determines which is which? I think part of it has to do with how temporary a particular situation might be that a word is used but also then how common.
