Spain produces half of the world's olive oil, but now it is witnessing lower crop yields. So there's a slump in oil production and prices of olive oil have been pushed to record levels. The history of cultivation goes back about 8,000 years. It really was fuel that the Roman Empire in particular ran on. We have archaeological evidence of olive as being grown in Crete from 2,500 BC.
