Is There a Predisposition to Standard Accents?
There's a prejudice towards some accents because they show us to be more intelligent or professional than others. Your accent is used very much as a marker by listeners of where you sit within the social hierarchy. And in respect of using a person's accent really isa kind of shorthand for their social standing. But i don't believe there's anything inherently one or the other about accents. I think we hear connotations with regard to what the perceptions are of that es group erh its based on race, class, regional origin, national origin.
