The Story of Race and Nationalism in Latin America

The portrait of Colombia's 14th president was altered after his death in 1866. The face acquired the strange, whitish-blue tint observed by Falborda over a hundred years later. Once the portrait was returned to Colombia, there was very little interest in it. Eventually, it ended up being abandoned in the Inquisition Palace. It wasn't until 2018 that the restored portrait and Nieto-Hill's black ancestry were recognized and celebrated by the Colombian state.
