There was no real attempt made at all in any kind of progressive way to say, well, the English are entitled to their national identity too. And academically, you know, if you talk to academics who were beginning to work on this idea in the early 20th century of English nationalism, I mean, they were laughed at. But what you see is that very, very strongly in the early part of the 21st century, you get this sort of expression of English identity and English nationalism. So it's a potent force because we can't ignore it but also it's quite hard to pin down," he says.
