The notes that accompany this suggest that it was around this time that Willitt first tried to have Charles Dexter Ward committed to his care in the asylum. We think this was all started by Charles's discovery of some written correspondence between Barbara Sayers, the woman who was to become his tutor, and a local cult leader named Joseph Kerwin. Subsequent to that discovery, Charles became convinced that Joseph Kerwin was actually his grandfather.We now know that Charles's grandmother was a woman called Eliza Tillingast.
