The NC 17 Rating: The First NC 17 Rated Movie

In July 1995 the MPAA gave showgirls an NC 17 rating and its studio MGM decided that rather than have Verhoeven cut his film which was partially about nudity in order to get an R rating they would allow showgirls to serve as a test case. No major studio had released an NC 17 film since the first one Henry and June five years earlier. The release could serve as the tipping point that would change the industry's attitude towards the rating quote should audiences show up in large numbers exhibitors who were reluctant to play showgirls will probably relent and carry it thus diminishing the impact of the NC 17 rating.
