The Four Cords of a Pop Song
The opening phrase of any solo is pretty important because it kind of sets the table, s the audience where you're coming from. Shankman begins this with apretty simple thing, just revolving right around a d. He immediately repeats it and varies it, which gives it this sense of cohesion that it otherwise wouldn't have. The melody wascomp to work over that courd progression, so you can always go back to it. It has a kind of sing song quality too at its very ty.
There's nothing like a good instrumental solo—that moment when a lone player stands in the spotlight and takes the helm, leading the band in an uncharted direction. On the first edition of Strong Solos, Kirk takes apart a few of his favorite solos, which a special focus on players who use motivic development, also known as theme and variations.
