Is There a Difference Between Portrait Watch Face and Depth Effect on the iPhone?

On the iphone, the portrait effect covers the complications or the widgets. If you use complications at all, it tuns off the depth effects. And i get that there's a lot going on at the bottom of the phone in terms of notifications and all that. But i most think i wonder if i could opt to put my widgets at the top of the screen insteada with the notifications above it,. Perhaps they'll get there and it'll be more flexible. but i have that moment where i'm like, oh, these are great, but like, here are two fun features, and i kind of can't do both of them at once.
