The emphasis on the patriarchs as a whole serves to highlight the continuities between the Davidic and the Abrahamic covenants, particularly since nothing concerning Moses or the Mosaic covenant is mentioned in the book. As far as the Deuteronomistic material of which first Samuel is a part, this material is the core of the issue for many scholars due to the negative portrayals of kingship and Deuteronomy. Howard disagrees with Gilbrandt on the authorship issue he opens his second article with in a disclaimer.
