Lovecraft Is Underrated
Lovecraft was a rationalist atheist who occasionally wished that he could be religious. He read voraciously about theosophy, but there is no evidence of him actually practising it. The western world was in the middle of a big occult revival at this time. Lovecraft may have been hinting to his readers: There are alwaysal these strange, mysterious cults practise weird ceremonies and intoning weird words. And what if they're actually in touch with something, something with tentacles, something that's out to get youait makes for great, for great horror.
