How to Extend Sentience Across the Animal Kingdom

It seems like knowing how to extend our theories of consciousness is the ultimate problem. It's hard to know how you would even in principle make those decisions. Jonathan Birch has an excellent paper on this that outlines his methodology for thinking about insect sentience. I think also it's reasonable to just have a broad brier that, close to us, you should expect animals to be conscious because we know consciousness emerged somewhere in evolution.
