Korea's first decade as democracy was a whirlwind. The Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 thrust Korea onto the world stage. Economic liberalization reforms were pursued but then, of course, economic crisis struck in 1997. Many South Koreans started to go overseas, not to emigrate, but for example, to pursue education overseas.
