For Bentham, what matters is unlike Mel's later division between higher and lower pleasures, just pleasure itself. For Bentham, pushpin, children's game can be as good as poetry because it can produce as much pleasure in a child as poetry produces in an adult. And so for Bentham, divisions of age and class and educational, all divisions would have to be justified in terms of producing the greatest amounts of pleasure. The democratization of luxury and pleasure depends on the export of the exploitative imperial system.
