I love talking about story stakes. It is one of my favorite things to talk about, and as an editor, it's something that i see a lot of writers struggle with. And the paradox is that bigger isn't always better. Am some ganres depend on huge problems. So when you bring that down to at tat personal level, and make those huge, global stakes matter to one person or one small group of people, then the reader can start caring about the stakes.
