Historian ebram kendy says it was slave traders who invented race. He points to a portuguese man named gomez de zurara, who wrote a book in the 14 fifties that lumped together all the people of africa as being inferior and beastly. The guy who wrote that book was writing a kind of glorifying book about a guy named henry the navigator,. And i'm 67 years old, fairly well educated. It's easy to see from that perspective how artificial it was for somebody to say, everybody in africa is we're going to call them black," he said.
