Non-parents invest in babies that are not their children at a way higher rate than other primates. People who get more help with child rearing from their parents, siblings or neighbors have more kids. Differences in alloperanting rates explain most of the differences in religious fertility. It doesn't explain the whole difference, but it explains a lot of it.
