There is a process in polarization literature called conflict extension. One issue leads to many issues, that leads to a strength, a strong identity across lots of issues. Every time you start to try and divide people on at one of these issues, it brings them closer to their in group and makes further away from their out groups. You've got this kind of mechanism where it becomes quite self fulfilling. We like conflict. The stories that are about conflict. And an highly emotional stories. So i think we can be a to blase about the extent to which this real and important to the general public.
