India's National Interests in the New World

The two countries have been looking at each other in their own right for the first time. The most interesting and under-discussed aspect of these deepening ties is India's national interests. New Delhi clearly views Beijing as a threat, there has been actual clashes between troops up in the Himalayas,. There's also growing competition in the Indian Ocean, which could itself become a flashpoint. We need to be aware that while from 30,000 feet, there is a shared interest in looking to build a coalition to balance and deter against potential PRC aggression. But we should not overstate the degree of overlap between Canberra and New Delhi's security interests.
