Gary, Indiana's booming steel industry made it a popular destination for blacks in the 1950s. Catherine and Joseph Jackson moved there to start their family that would one day become the Steel City's most famous export. In 1956, Gary was ranked by Ebony magazine as the best place in the country for blacks to live. The home they lived in at 2300 Jackson Street is now known as 2,300 Jackson Street.
