The Marriage of Convenience

Sophia and her sister Anna belonged to what they called the Generation of the 1860s. They were people who believed in a peaceful social revolution. Sophia married another Russian student Vladimir Koveldevsky because he would give permission for her to study abroad but her father probably would not have. In Russia a woman was listed on her passport as either her husband or her father so she needed that male relative's approval before going abroad.
