Bob Greene received his BA in physics at Cal Berkeley and his PhD in physics at Harvard. He was working on computational models of supermassive black holes in other galaxies when he realized computers could do complex problems. The idea that you could compute using the way the brain computes rather than more traditional rules based computing led to quite a lot of work for him early on. It's been quite an interesting journey as the technology has just, it has clearly hit the hockey stick.
