The Dickey-Wicker Amendment and Stem Cell Research

There was a gentleman's agreement, if you will, that you can make people in the lab, but you wouldn't let them grow beyond a certain point because some people were just kind of squeamish about it all. We know that because they're calling them embryo-like models, synthetic embryos, they don't fall under the same regulations as human beings. As long as they can keep this narrative going, they fall outside of the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, which means that they can obtain federal funds to do this research.
