The Energy of a Jet Through the Intergalactic Medium

Cygnus A has the energy liberated by 10 to the power of 7 supernovae, which is quite remarkable. The most distant quasar yet seen lies 29.36 billion light years away from Earth. This means that they can be seen at distances much greater than other objects like stars or regular galaxies. And it's this quality of being so luminous and so much easier to detect at large distances that makes them important probes in astronomy.
