The byzantines watched helplessly as their asian territories were swallowed up. Jerusalem, recaptured less than a decade before, surrendered to arab armies in the year six 37. The general emperor heraclius had once been the commander of his father's fleet but developed an overwhelming phalasophobia, or fear of the sea. When egypt fell to arab forces in the year 6 forty two, the byzantine empire lost its rich food supplies which had been a major source of grain for the capital. By six forty seven, the last byzantine territory in africa, the ancient city of carthage, had also fallen to the advancing arab armies.
