Introduction

China is currently experiencing an unprecedented level of civil unrest. People are protesting harsh lockdown measures that have been placed for almost three years now. The country's zero-covid policy has come at a significant social cost. Despite the understandable animosity we as outsiders might feel towards China, nobody should want the economy to collapse through something like a violent revolution or social breakdown. Altruistically, we shouldn't want this because the current system still supports hundreds of millions of extremely economically vulnerable people.
