i can buy the idea that twitter makes us seem more polarized than we really are. But i certainly want to believe that what i'm talking about more is populism, like the turn against a failed elite. There was really nothing in donald trump's rhetoric in 20 16 and during his presidency that deviated from well established tropes of populism going back to the nineteenth century.
