Inflation is a theory of how the universe formed. The idea was first proposed by Allan Thak in 1981. It involved using bubbles to get past an energy barrier that prevents them from ending phase transitions. But it didn't work, and so Mr Thak came up with his own solution. He says: 'I thought i was so excited about this... then suddenly it became the most depressing talk i had ever heard'
