Flavio was accused of brokering an arms deal for the CIA. His defense said he wasn't a criminal, but that he had been cooperating with them. As part of evidence in his prosecution, the CIA turned over recordings of Flavio's calls. This is significant because otherwise it would have been impossible to corroborate any claims made by Flavio.
